There Goes Rhymin' Simon Įmotional Contracts High Top Mountain: 10 Year Anniversary Edition Bob Marley - Tuff Gong Jamaica Pressings.Top 301 Best Sellers Of All Time (2019).Now we’re not quite as busy, but we sell records and that’s what we’re going to be known for,” he said. We used to be a busy cafe with a bunch of indoor seating. “ basically turned our business into something else. What started as an additional source of revenue during the pandemic has turned into a different business entirely than the one Peters started nearly 12 years ago - and overall, he’s pleased. People came out and it was really great to see.” It was really huge in April when I was working by myself and didn’t know whether was going to survive or not. “I couldn’t have made it without the neighborhood support. “I appreciate everybody supporting us this last year,” Peters said. Peters is now considering expanding the record shop to the first floor, making it even easier for customers to pick up the latest record release along with a cashew milk latte. Cafe drinks and food are still takeout only, but Empire has some outdoor seating available. Now that COVID-19 restrictions are lifting, four masked customers can browse the record store at a time. Until recently, only two masked customers could peruse the collection at a time. Last summer, Peters started growing the record collection for the store, buying from four different music distributors to compile around 1,000 titles before opening. Family life, as well as operating a business, have taken over his free time since, but even if he’s unable to play music at the moment, “at least I’m surrounded by music,” he said. He also played in bands from his late teens until becoming a parent. In fact, Peters inherited over a thousand of his uncle’s mostly jazz and classical records that might make their way into the record store at a later date. Peters’ father was a music professor and his uncle was a record collector. One of his first ideas was to open a bookstore, but he quickly realized he was much more knowledgeable about music. Since indoor seating was impossible due to COVID-19 protocols, all cafe drinks and food were takeout only, and Peters started brainstorming what to do with the underutilized space upstairs. Another popular staple is Empire’s cashew milk, also made in-house. Peters kept the same drink offerings, but pared the menu down to something more manageable: pastries from Macrina Bakery and Empire’s popular homemade waffles - including gluten free and vegan options - as well as in-house-made chia pudding. Empire has a full menu of specialty coffee drinks and at one point had a variety of sandwich options made with housemade pesto and hummus. When Washington entered lockdown last March, Peters made the difficult decision to furlough his staff so they could collect unemployment, while he alone operated the cafe for the first month of quarantine. If there’s something a guest wants that’s not in the bins, he does his best to track it down and order it. Peters makes sure those artists are always in stock, along with an expansive collection of hip-hop, rock, pop, jazz, classical, and so much more. The shop’s best-selling artists are Prince, David Bowie, Kendrick Lamar, and A Tribe Called Quest. “It’s fun to do the research and see what people in my neighborhood are into,” Peters said. (Photo: Alex Garland)Īs a record collector himself, Peters learned to buy not only for his own tastes, but for the collectors of Columbia City. Vinyl selection inside of Empire Roasters & Records. “There’s a lot of record collectors in the neighborhood, and I even had quite a few people that didn’t have a record player that saw it as an excuse to get a record player,” Peters said. Vinyl collectors in Columbia City used to have to trek to Georgetown Records or Silver Platters in SoDo, but now those buyers are heading to Empire. The shop also has a selection of music-related books, including most of the 33 ⅓ series, a book series about acclaimed albums. The record shop upstairs is about 600 square feet, home to almost 2,000 new records, and growing. “We would have never come up with this idea had it not been for the pandemic,” Peters said. Adding a record store to a cafe might have been an unconventional choice, but based on the positive community response, Columbia City’s only record store is here to stay. Owner Ian Peters repurposed the cafe’s upstairs seating area into a record shop, which opened last November. While some coffee shops expanded their offerings to include grocery items or wines during lockdown, Empire went a different direction. Like many other cafes, Columbia City’s Empire Roasters and Records had to make some changes in order to weather the COVID-19 pandemic.

Oddly, neither Andy Taylor nor Steve Douglas showed much interest in women. Douglas's father–in–law, "Bub" O'Casey, also pitched in at 837 Mill Street. My Three Sons's (1960–1972) widower Steve Douglas ( Fred MacMurray), a bland aeronautical engineer, struggled a bit more than Andy Taylor but still managed to make raising three boys look like a day at the park. It helped that his milquetoast son, Opie ( Ron Howard), didn't pose much of a threat to his authority, and Andy had Aunt Bee ( Frances Bavier) to manage the household responsibilities with a maternal touch. Though a little on the homespun side, Taylor handled fatherhood with a laid–back sense of humor. Mayberry, North Carolina's down–home Sheriff Andy Taylor, played by Andy Griffith in his eponymous rural comedy (1960–1968), was one of television's first single dads. However these fathers didn't go it alone most often they had reliable domestic help. There were a handful of shows with single dads-widowers, not divorcés, of course. Not all early sitcoms portrayed the "traditional" family. Wrinkles in the Fabric of the All–American Family The Beave's ever–patient, accountant father, Hugh Beaumont's Ward, was always on hand to offer words of wisdom and to make sure his son learned a valuable lesson from his miscues and more often than not, Ward learned a few lessons himself. While Ozzie and Harriet was not grounded in reality, Leave It to Beaver's (1957–1963) title character, played by Jerry Mathers, managed to get himself involved in some sort of minor calamity each episode. Ozzie's occupation, if he even had one, was never mentioned, so he had plenty of time to guide his sons through dating problems, career choices and marriage. In fact, Harriet rarely left the kitchen and Ozzie didn't venture much out of the yard. The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet (1952–1966), television's longest–running sitcom, was decidedly low on adventures. Nevertheless, at the end of the day, Jim Anderson would always replace his jacket and tie with a cardigan and shift into problem–solving mode for his family.Įven more virtuous than the Andersons were the Nelsons: Ozzie, Harriet, David and Ricky, family members in real life, too. With sobriquets like that, it's obvious those kids didn't create too many ripples for dad. Father Knows Best (1954–1963) aptly portrayed the stereotypical family, with Robert Young playing insurance agent Jim Anderson, a loving husband and the doting father of three children with the nicknames Princess, Bud, and Kitten. Nineteen–fifties television mostly reflected the typical American family: man as breadwinner and woman as homemaker. In honor of Father's Day, here's a look at how television's patresfamilias have evolved since the 1950s. Who wants to watch on television how silly we look stressing over life's nagging exigencies? Nonetheless, most TV dads cope with the stress of parenthood all too easily and laugh off minor disasters, rarely yell at the kids, and never seem to run out of cash. NBC's short–lived Daddio featured a family in which the father quit his job to take care of the kids when the mother accepted a position as an attorney. Recently, programs have kept pace with the changing landscape of the post–feminism era-the dawn of the male gender revolution that has seen two million men staying at home with the kids and millions of divorced fathers seeking custody of their children. While 1950s television had men coming home from a day at the office to be greeted at the door with a peck on the cheek from an adoring wife and hugs from enamored children, recent network offerings have introduced single dads who juggle careers, laundry, and adolescent crises. Robert Reed as Mike Brady in The Brady Bunchįred MacMurray as Steve Douglas in My Three Sonsĭan Castellaneta as the voice of Homer Simpson in The Simpsonsĭear old dad has come a long way on the small screen, from television's early fathers who wore cardigans and dispensed advice to today's TV dads, who vacuum and make PB&J for the kids' lunches. Game Audio Connect makes it easy to transfer game audio assets to game audio engines or middleware, such as Audiokinetic Wwise. Nuendo offers particular functions for analyzing the audio in your project. Depending on the feature, élastique, MPEX, or Standard algorithm presets are available. In Nuendo, time-stretching and pitch-shifting algorithms are used for offline processes, in the Sample Editor, or for the Flattening Realtime Processing function. Time Stretch and Pitch Shift Algorithms.Nuendo comes with a number of included effect plug-ins that you can use to process audio, group, instrument, and ReWire channels.ĭirect Offline Processing allows you to instantly add plug-in effects and audio processes to the selected audio events, clips, or ranges, without destructing the original audio. Nuendo provides a master meter that works as a multi-channel true peak meter, and a loudness meter that allows you to measure the loudness in compliance with the loudness recommendation R 128 of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The Control Room allows you to divide the studio environment into the performing area (studio) and the engineer/producer area (control room). VCA faders serve as remote controls for channel faders in the MixConsole. You can undo/redo MixConsole parameter changes for an open project at any time. Furthermore, you can set up the input and output routing for multiple tracks or channels at the same time. It allows you to control level, pan, solo/mute status, etc. The MixConsole provides a common environment for producing mixes in stereo or surround. The ADR Panel allows you to perform ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) and language dubbing tasks. There are two types of markers: position markers and cycle markers. Markers are used to locate certain positions quickly. The transpose functions for audio and MIDI in Nuendo allow you to change the pitches of audio and MIDI for playback without changing the actual MIDI notes or the audio. This way, you do not need to move, copy, and paste events in the Project window. Using an arranger track allows you to specify how and when specific sections are played back, even in live performances. The arranger functions in Nuendo allow you to work in a non-linear fashion. Quantizing is designed to correct errors, but you can also use it in a creative way.įades allow you to gradually increase or decrease the volume at the start or end of audio events or audio clips, and to create smooth transitions. Quantizing means moving recorded audio or MIDI and positioning it on the nearest grid position that is musically relevant. You can add audio and MIDI files to your project by importing them. In Nuendo, you can record audio and MIDI. This is useful if you have no external MIDI instrument at hand and you do not want to draw in notes with the Draw tool. The On-Screen Keyboard allows you to play and record MIDI notes by using your computer keyboard or mouse. Nuendo offers multiple methods and functions to control playback and transport. You can also work with selection ranges, which are independent from the event/part and track boundaries. Parts and events are the basic building blocks in Nuendo.Įditing in the Project window is not restricted to handling whole events and parts. In Nuendo, events and parts are placed on tracks. Tracks are the building blocks of your project. Each track is assigned to a particular channel strip in the MixConsole. Tracks are listed from top to bottom in the track list and extend horizontally across the Project window. They allow you to import, add, record, and edit parts and events. You must create and set up a project to work with the program. In Nuendo, projects are the central documents. The Project window provides an overview of the project, and allows you to navigate and perform large scale editing. Here, you can also set up group and FX channels, external effects, external instruments, and the Control Room. To play back and record in Nuendo, you must set up input and output busses in the Audio Connections window. To use Nuendo, you must set up your audio, and if required, your MIDI system. Here you will find detailed information about all the features and functions in the program. This is the Operation Manual for Steinberg’s Nuendo. CSL DD mounted and ready to drive ( source) This is a super smooth and very impressive wheelbase for the money – and it is as I write this the cheapest direct drive wheel you can own (see more DD wheels here). As you might expect, I’ve chosen the Fanatec CSL DD with boost kit for an extra €149.95 to deliver the full 8Nm of torque. You can make a few savings which I’ll mention in the equipment list below. If these numbers are a bit beyond where your budget is at the moment, don’t worry about it. With a slight caveat that I haven’t included import taxes if you’re buying outside of the EU – I think the numbers below are pretty amazing for the gear you can get: Build a sim racing rig on a budget that will last and will need little in the way of upgrades throughout its life. So my approach here isn’t just to list a bunch of cheap sim racing gear it’s to help you consider affordable equipment that can be taken seriously. For a very small amount more than the price of a Thrustmaster VG T300RS wheelbase, you can own a direct drive wheelbase – the rather impressive Fanatec CSL DD. The Logitechs and Thrustmasters of this world have, for now, fallen behind the ever-dominant Fanatec. I don’t believe that it’s worth pursuing gear drive or belt drive steering wheelbases anymore. Today, I’m looking lower down the price spectrum – identifying the cheapest racing simulator cockpit you can put together, perhaps even in time for Christmas.Ī professional looking rig is achievable with some thought and careful shopping around, as a lot of the sim racing community can attest: Sim-Lab GT1 Evo / Fanatec Clubsport V3 pedals / DD2 wheelbase / Sparco Seat / Samsung G9 monitor ( source)Ĭan something close to the rig setup above be built? Nobody ever said sim racing was cheap although by comparison to the eye-wateringly expensive real-life Motorsport it’s certainly far friendlier on the wallet. The reviewer appreciated the accurate charging, that you can monitor the progress, and it's easy to use. Wirecutter previously recommended the Powerex charger for people who need eight charging slots on one outlet. There are three charge modes: rapid charge (one to two hours), soft charge (three to four hours), and conditioning, which can take a full day. The LCD screen uses three bars to show the charging status of each battery. The MH-C800S can charge between one and eight NiMH or NiCd AA or AAA batteries. Pros: Large display, charges a broad range of battery types, automatic battery detectionĬons: Only displays the progress of one battery at a time, charge time increases when charging four batteries The Nitecore D4 Charger can charge an array of battery types, while displaying the charge progress on an easy-to-read LCD panel. Our guide features chargers with a track record of versatility, durability, and performance. While researching the best rechargeable battery chargers, we examined thousands of expert and buyer reviews and ratings of several models. "Smart chargers" can also stop charging your batteries once they are full as opposed to less effective "dumb chargers," which tend to charge for a certain amount of time. This cycles your batteries through discharging and recharging in order to help them reach their full capacity and lengthen their life. Some chargers also have a "conditioning" function. If you are concerned about having to wait for the charging to complete before using your device again, consider buying a couple of sets of batteries for the device. Instead, look for a charger that offers "gentle" or "slow" charging. High-speed charging can severely shorten the lifespan of your batteries. For example, don't pick a charger based on charging speed alone. However, rechargeable batteries can become damaged over time with the wrong kind of charger. But rechargeable batteries can be reused 1,000 times or more, which is better for the environment and your wallet in the long run. It's estimated that Americans dispose of 3 billion batteries every year, according to battery recycling firm Battery Solutions. |
